Textbook: Goldstein, Cognitive Psychology (1st edition 2005, ISBN 0-534-57726-1)
Course goal: To provide a survey of selected problem areas in modern cognitive psychology, focusing on experimental work and on the relationship between cognitive processes and the nervous system.
Prerequisities: The course material is easier to understand if you have been exposed to experimental psychology. A good introductory course, a basic statistics course, and one or two of the 300 level courses in these areas is recommended (310, 312, 313). You can take the course without some of these, but it may be harder.
PowerPoint Notes: A set of lecture outlines including most of the graphs and figures presented in class (based on my powerpoint slides) is available for download from the course Web site
Website The course Web site includes Web pages that cover some of the instructors classroom presentation, an online discussion section, descriptions of assignments, practice quizzes and other course related information.
The course Web site is hosted on Carmen and can be accessed by registered students at
http://carmen.osu.edu.
Grading:
Course grades will be based on points earned from the following sources:
quizzes (2 totaling 50 points)
Homework assignments (at least 40 points)
Final 30 points
Attendance 10 points

Attendance will be taken about 5 times per quarter without advance notice. Absences do not require an excuse unless a quiz was missed. Perfect attendance earns 10 points. The first missed roll call will be penalized 1 point. Subsequent missed roll calls are penalized 2 points. If you are not present when attendance is taken there is no way for you to earn this extra credit or make it up. If you arrive late on a day when attendance has been called it is your responsibility to notify the instructor by the end of that class.
