initiatives

Although it's sometimes hard to remember that our endeavors are barely three years old, we are embarking on substantially new ground-what we call a campus-wide initiative--for at least the next three years. At the same time, our goals and a number of our regular activities follow the course originally established in Autumn 2004. We aim to build on our success at promoting critical, comparative, and historical perspectives on literacy studies across OSU and beyond.
- Harvey J. Graff, Autumn 2007

LiteracyStudies@OSU initiatives are the result of shared interests and collaborative efforts. The aim of its public programs, special events, and student activities is to enable conversation and cooperation across departments from across campus. The dialogue is giving rise to new insights and ideas. Participation is also helping increase awareness of the complexity of making, communicating, and comprehending meaning in diverse media and cultural contexts.

The Graduate Interdisciplinary Specialization in Literacy Studies is one of many important outcomes. The curriculum brings together historical, contextual, comparative, and critical perspectives and modes of research aimed at understanding the different uses of literacy and what they mean to the participants and society.
