Graduate Interdisciplinary Seminar on Literacy Studies
February 2008 Meeting Agenda
I. LITERACY IN Cross-Cultural CONTEXTS
In anticipation of the inaugural Ohio State University Lecture on Literacy and Literacy Studies, we will meet to discuss and respond to John Duffy's work on Hmong literacy practices in the U. S. During the past decade Duffy has published on the social and cultural functions of literacy within this immigrant community. His work deconstructs simple notions of the oral/literate divide and posits a rhetorical understanding of literacy and writing. A panel of graduate student respondents volunteered to respond to three articles by Duffy.
-
"Never Hold a Pencil: Rhetoric and Relations in the Concept of 'Preliteracy'"
-
Respondent: Amy Oswalt, Doctoral Student, College of Education
-
"Letters from the Fair City: A Rhetorical Conception of Literacy"
-
Respondent: Lisya Seloni, Doctoral Candidate; Foreign and Second Language Education
-
"Recalling the Letter: The Uses of Oral Testimony in Historical Studies of Literacy"
-
Respondent: Shawn Casey, Doctoral Student, English
The articles can be downloaded from
http://literacystudies.osu.edu/academics/gradprograms.cfm. Come prepared for a thoughtful discussion of Duffy's work, organized and moderated by Shawn Casey.
II. Grad Sem WEIGH-IN (ideas, not Pounds)
The discussion of Duffy's work will be followed by what promises to be a lively brainstorming session about the future of the Graduate Seminar in Literacy Studies at OSU. This will be an opportunity to weigh in on all sorts of ideas, plans, and possibilities for the coming year. Organized and moderated by
Kate White.
